Prince Phillip
Prince Phillip, the youngest son of
King Amynatas and Eurydice I, was
captured in 386 BC, when he was
14 years old, and held hostage in
Thebes. As was the tradition during
that time when young royalty were
captured, it was expected that they
would be treated with respect and the
captors were responsible for their
education. During the four years that
Phillip was held, he received both military
and diplomatic education under
the care of Pammenes a Theban
general and enthusiastic advocate
of the Sacred Band of Thebes,
who taught him Theban
military theory.
